screen-shot-2016-10-05-at-12-25-23-pmHere at Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of Virginia, we have something to celebrate during the month of October that doesn’t involve candy, costumes and trick or treating! October is also known for National Orthodontics Health Month. A month where we can celebrate our dedication to not only to eye-catching smiles but to superior oral health and comfort and our patients also work very hard to achieve those goals.

Since the 20th century, well before your and even your parents’ time, orthodontic practices all over the U.S. have worked collectively, every October, to promote their professional services and inform their communities about the important work they do for their patients. You see, braces and the many forms they take weren’t always as outrageously popular as they are now!

For your benefit this October, we include a few reminders from the American Association of Orthodontics which will protect your braces, aligners and other orthodontic appliances this Halloween season:

  • Avoid: caramel, gummies, licorice, taffy, bubblegum, hard-shelled or chewy candy with nuts, taco chips, popcorn and soda…and never chew ice!
  • But you CAN have, in moderation: soft chocolates, peanut butter cups and other melt-in-your-mouth soft treats.
  • To avoid orthodontic emergencies and renew your commitment to oral health during National Orthodontic Health Month, promise yourself “no hard or gooey sweets” before Halloween.
  • Brush your pearly whites if you do indulge in soft candy because as we all know, sweets cause cavities. You don’t want to ruin the lifetime benefits of straight teeth (which are less prone to decay) by discovering a bunch of cavities at the appointment when your orthodontist does the Big Reveal of your beautiful straight smile, do you? Nah.

If you have questions about celebrating Halloween with braces, feel free to give our understanding, experienced team at Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics of Virginia a call.
